Recognize a Dental Emergency

Technically speaking, a dental emergency is any situation that threatens the life of your tooth or is an immediate threat to your mouth. There are times where you might feel like you have an emergency, but in reality, it is simply something you should take care of in the next few days when you can get an appointment. Some examples of a dental emergency are:

  • Severely Cracked Tooth – We can take care of small cracks at a scheduled dental visit. You will want to get in as quickly as you can, however, to avoid any additional damage to the tooth. Severe cracks should be treated as an emergency, as they present a very real danger to the life of your tooth.
  • Broken Tooth – Broken teeth can be very painful and problematic. It is imperative that you get in to see Dr. Ki as soon as you can. She can repair the tooth and keep any debris from getting into the tooth and causing an infection.
  • Dislodged Tooth – Time is your enemy in these situations. The longer you wait to call Dr. Ki, the less chance she has of saving your tooth. To keep your tooth viable for reinsertment, pick it up only from the crown (the visible part), lightly rinse it under warm water, and then submerge it in a cup of milk. This will help keep your tooth alive while you travel to see Dr. Ki.
  • Abscess – This is a pocket of infection that develops in your gums from an infected tooth nerve. It is important to get in to see Dr. Ki before this infection eats away at your gums and tooth. You could lose your tooth and may even experience damage to your entire mouth if you don’t take steps to get the infection cleared up.
